Efie Gallery and Bootleg Griot present a monthly film programme in the Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab liberation cinema. Through a carefully curated selection of films, the series considers how revolutionary aesthetics, political movements, and diasporic imaginations have shaped and continue to shape the language of cinema across continents.
The Wind Will Carry Us (1999 · Directed by Abbas Kiarostami)
About the film
Directed by Abbas Kiarostami, The Wind Will Carry Us follows a small group of outsiders who arrive in a remote Iranian village under unclear pretences, waiting for an event that never quite unfolds as expected. As the days stretch on, the camera lingers on the village’s rhythms, landscapes, and conversations, allowing humour, tension, and tenderness to surface in quiet increments.
Moving between observation and uncertainty, the film reflects on looking, listening, and the ethics of presence. Kiarostami’s restrained approach makes space for what remains unresolved, placing the everyday in dialogue with larger questions of mortality, community, and the narratives we impose upon other lives.
