Ablade Glover

Ablade Glover (b. 1934, Ghana) is one of Ghana’s foremost artists and a seminal figure on the West African art scene, known for his vibrant abstract canvases that depict daily life in Ghana.

Born in Accra, he studied at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana (1957–1958) before accepting a scholarship to study textile design at the Central School of Arts and Design in London (1959–1962). He then returned to Ghana to teach for a period before continuing his studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in Art Education. Glover later pursued a Master’s degree at Kent State University in the United States, followed by a doctorate at Ohio State University. Upon his final return to Ghana in 1974, Glover joined the art department at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, where he remained for 20 years until his retirement.

In 1995, he founded the Artist Alliance Gallery in Accra to create a nexus for displaying and celebrating the art of Ghanaian artists. While actively engaged in educational and institutional initiatives, Glover continued to produce a prolific body of work that captures the Ghanaian landscape and the vibrancy of its people. His expressive canvases, with their multitude of dynamic brushstrokes, evoke the tension, beauty, and energy of Africa.

His work not only portrays the spirit of Ghana but also resonates with the broader Sub-Saharan African experience, offering a powerful reflection of life, struggle, and cultural vitality.
