Published on the occasion of Abdoulaye Konaté’s solo exhibition Sambadio, this volume marks Efiɛ Gallery’s inaugural print publication and offers an extended view of the Malian artist’s longstanding engagement with textile, colour, and material.
Bringing together archival material, sketches, and documentation of works spanning Konaté’s career, the publication traces the development of his visual language and its relationship to contemporary textile practice. His use of colour, pattern, and layered fabric reflects a sustained dialogue between West African textile traditions and broader cultural references, while the works consider themes of ecology, climate, identity, and cultural exchange.
The publication features contributions by Simon Njami, Prof. Yacouba Konaté, Ousseynou Wade, and Awa Konaté, whose essays offer varied perspectives on the artist’s practice, its historical development, and its place within the wider context of contemporary African art.
