About the Catalogue
Published on the occasion of María Magdalena Campos-Pons’ solo exhibition at Efiɛ Gallery, I Am Soil. My Tears Are Water. brings together a visual and textual record of the project, tracing its development from initial ideas and studies to its presentation in the gallery.
The publication offers insight into Campos-Pons’ multidisciplinary practice, bringing together watercolor, glass sculpture, installation, and site-specific performance. Preparatory sketches, conceptual studies, and documentation from the artist’s studio reveal the processes through which the works took shape, while accompanying texts explore the botanical, cultural, and migratory histories that connect Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.
Contributions by Faridah Folawiyo, Odette Casamayor-Cisneros, Sabrina Moura, and Grace Aneiza Ali provide distinct perspectives on the artist’s practice, its historical contexts, and the themes that underpin the exhibition. The catalogue also documents the collaborative performances developed with musician Kamaal Malak, offering a broader perspective on the relationship between material, movement, sound, and memory within the work.
