About the Catalogue
Published on the occasion of Aïda Muluneh’s solo exhibition This Bloom I Borrow, this catalogue documents a body of work developed during the artist’s residency in Dubai and presented at Efiɛ Gallery.
The publication follows Muluneh’s exploration of photography beyond its conventional documentary function, examining her movement towards a more experimental and materially driven practice. Archival photographs are transformed through processes of painting, layering, and screen-printing, creating compositions in which colour, architectural forms, gesture, and symbolism intersect.
Contributions by Grace Aneiza Ali, Maktoum Al Maktoum, and Simon Njami offer complementary perspectives on Muluneh’s practice and the ideas explored throughout the exhibition, placing the works within broader conversations around photography, identity, memory, and representation. The catalogue offers a record of the visual language developed specifically for the exhibition, while providing insight into the processes and ideas that informed this stage of the artist’s practice.
